Food chain!

Why do we eat?
A lot of you might say well, if we don't eat we'll die. That's true but why?

Imagine we're in the woods. What do we see around us? Grass, trees, maybe a rabbit if we're lucky.
How do animals and other living things survive? What do they eat? What gets eaten?

Watch this video below to understand why we eat and what the food chain is.

Here are a few food chain examples:

Task:
Here are some animal/living thing cards. Try to come up with as many food chain as you can.
Remember!
All living things in the food chain should be from the same habitat (place where animals live).

Hint: Food chains always start with a plant.

Who has more money?

Well done to you all who have completed yesterday's task! πŸ‘
Today, we will focus on ordering money.

Now, think about all the coins we have...£2, £1, 50p, 20p,10p, 5p, 2p, 1p.
Let's see if you can solve this really tricky challenge! Can you find more than one answer?

[Thursday] Good Morning Year 4!

Good morning! I hope you all slept well.

Thank you Kirsty, Ayaan and Rushane for sending in your work yesterday. I must say Thor is a very popular Norse god since all of you chose him!
Well done Kirsty for your amazing unicorn drawing! Very impressive I must say!

Yesterday's sentence winner is....Rushane!
Here's his sentence:

In the middle of the night, Rushane watched horror movies whilst eating scrumptious popcorn.

This morning, we will review our learning on inverted commas ("  ").

First, watch this video.

Task 1: Add in the missing inverted commas ("  ").

1) Miss Alice announced, The school trip is cancelled.
2) That's not fair! shouted the toddler.
3) What did you say? asked Kirsty.
4) My favourite food is pizza! exclaimed Nico.

Task 2: Change the following speech bubbles into speech using inverted commas.

For example,

Answer: The hero flew through the air and shouted, "Hold on tight! I'll save you!"
Make sure you remember the capital letter for the speech and the inverted commas!

Think about 'How to Train your Dragon'. Write the part where Hiccup went on the Initiation programme. Include at least 5 speech! (from Hiccup, Fishlegs, Gobber, Snotlout or the other boys)

Best,
Miss Alice 😸

THOR! Who's that?

For topic, we will look at NORSE GODS.
I'm sure most of you have heard of Thor and Loki (maybe from the Avengers?). They are actually Norse gods whom the Vikings believed in.

Watch this video below to find out all the different Norse gods.

Here are some of the famous gods:

Task for today:

I want you to draw your favourite Norse god.
Label what they are in charge of and who they are related to.

Money money money!

Before we start today, I would just like to share with you Nico's work on rounding.
Well done Nico for making sure your work is neat and clear!

Today, we will focus on money!

Remember! £1= 100 pence

Think about all the notes and coins there are and have a go at the reasoning question below.
Use the sentence stem:
Amir has one note which can be £_____.
Annie has three coins. Each coin can be £____. She will have £____ in total.

[Wednesday] Good Morning Year 4!

Good morning Year 4! Happy Wednesday!

Firstly, I just want to share this amazing shark artwork by Rushane. Very impressive!
Thank you Nico, Ayaan and Rushane for sending in your setting description! Well done for trying to use all your senses and for adding some similes! πŸ‘

Today, I want us to look at fronted adverbials.
Fronted adverbials are phrases placed at the front of a sentence which tell us how, when or where the verb is taking place.

Create sensible fronted adverbials for the following sentences:

1) _____________________________________________, Carrot went for a walk.

2) _____________________________________________, Rushane created a pop up shark card.

3) _____________________________________________, Ayaan wrote a powerful setting description.

4) _____________________________________________, Nico cooked some marshmallows.
This time, I will give you the fronted adverbial and I want you to write the second half of the sentence. I will pick the most creative one and post it on tomorrow's blog!

In the middle of the night, __________________________________________________________.

Keep up the good work, Year 4!

Best,
Miss Alice 😸

Art this afternoon...

Sometimes in art, we don't need much equipment!

Take out a piece of scrap paper and a pencil and try to follow this step by step guide to draw some amazing illustration.

1) Pop up shark!

2) Unicorn girl

3) Spiderman

Take your pick and email me your finished work! I really want to see them!

Halves and quarters

Do you remember that we use fractions and decimals to represent parts of a whole?

For example, 1/2 is a half which is the same as 0.5 because 0.5 + 0.5 = one whole.

Have a go at the question below:

Remember 1/4 is a quarter.

[Tuesday] Good Morning Year 4

Wow Year 4! I am very happy to see some of  your letters to me.
Thank you Kirsty, Rushane, Ayaan and Nico for telling me what you've been up to.

Regarding your question, Kirsty, Carrot is a boy. In fact he is an old man (cat) now. He is actually 13 years old! That's around 80 years old in human age! πŸ™€ That's a lot older than your cat, Rushane!

I hope you enjoyed your weekend filled with marshmallows, Nico and I am sorry about your bunny, Ayaan. 😭

Today, I want you to use your creativity to write a powerful setting description.

This is a magical forest. Close your eyes and imagine you're standing in front of the door.
What can you see?
What can you hear?
What can you smell?
What can you feel?

Make sure you check your work!

Email your finished work to debeauvoirprimaryschool@gmail.com

I can't wait to read them 😊

Best,
Miss Alice 😸

Pyramids and mummies!

In the Autumn term, we learned a lot about the ancient Egyptians.
Today, I want you to remind yourselves of the things we learned!

Do you remember why the Egyptians built the pyramids?
What are mummies?
Why did the ancient Egyptians mummify the pharaohs?
How did they mummify them?

Watch this video below and answer the questions.

1) What were the pyramids for?
2) What are mummies?
3) Why did the Egyptians mummify dead people?
4) What are the steps to mummify a dead person?
5) Was everybody mummified? Why not?

Remember...rounding?

Before we dive into today's maths, I just want to say well done to these children for going on Times Tables Rockstar this week!
πŸ‘ Rushane, Angela, Charlie, Alia, Kirsty, Naima, Imogen, Isabella and Elif! πŸ‘

Make sure you're all practising your times tables on TTRockstar!

Today for maths, we're going to review rounding. Do you remember what it is?
It's when we make numbers simpler.

For example, if I want to round 33 to the nearest 10, I first find the 10 before 33 and the 10 after 30.
30 --- 33 --- 40
I then look at the ones column. 3 is sitting in the ones column.
We let it rest.
33 rounded to the nearest 10 = 30
The number line also shows you that 33 is closer to 30 than to 40.

Now's your turn to have a go.

[Monday] Good Morning Year 4!

Another week has started!

How was your weekend? What have you been doing at home?

Thank you Ayaan, Nico and Rushane for sending in your stories about the mirror in the attic.
I especially loved Rushane's idea of the colourful theme park the mirror took you! Well done! πŸ‘

For English today, I would like you to write me a letter telling me what you have been up to!
Email it to debeauvoirprimaryschool@gmail.com when you're done.

Here's what Miss Alice has been up to...

Some of you might have heard from your grown up at home that I've flown back to Hong Kong to be with my family since I miss them very much during this time.
This is a photo I took on the plane. Look at the fluffy clouds!

I have finally seen Frozen 2 on the plane as well. I loved the songs!! My favourite is Lost in the Woods (the song Christoff sang for Anna).

Of course! I am now home with Carrot. Here's a picture of him sunbathing on the cushions.

I miss all of you a lot and I hope you're doing well.
I can't wait to read about what you've been up to. Feel free to send me a few of your pictures too!

Best,
Miss Alice 😸

PE at home!

Miss Alice will also try to join this workout! Comment below to tell me whether you did the whole thing... It will be hard!

Ordering decimals [Part II]

We will continue with ordering decimals today!
The questions are a bit trickier without the place value chart but I'm sure you can do it! πŸ‘

In 4.12, 1 is in the ___________ column and 2 is in the _____________ column.
In 4.8, 8 is in the _________________ column.
Because 1 tenth = ________ hundredths, 4.12 has _____________ hundredths.

I also found this tricky extension! Have a go if you're feeling extra tenacious!

Remember.
Ascending means from the smallest to the greatest
Descending means from the greatest to the smallest
